Reflections on the Origin of Donor Abacus

Baptist Health South Florida and the opening of the Miami Cancer Center

Lately, I’ve been reflecting on the earliest days of Abacus and its success with Baptist Health South Florida. Its use and success motivated me to institutionalize this major donor fundraising tool beyond my private consulting clients at Copley Raff.

In 2013, the Baptist Health South Florida Foundation engaged Copley Raff to evaluate its fundraising potential and plan for greater success.

Copley Raff stayed on to help implement the advancement plan. As part of this engagement, Baptist prospect researchers readily adopted the “Major Donor Ask Calculator” to run profiles for every major donor nearing the solicitation stage.

The Calculator proved indispensable as we prepared for and launched the $200M campaign to build the Miami Cancer Institute. The Institute is one of the world’s largest and most comprehensive outpatient cancer centers.

Using what is now Donor AbacusTM in conjunction with a complete reorganization of staff and board operations, Baptist yielded remarkable results over the following five years:

Prospect researchers incorporated Abacus profiles and Ask recommendations into every major donor conversation. Foundation leadership raised fundraising targets and began incorporating physicians and their grateful patients to implement a more focused approach to securing support. Staff and volunteer leaders embraced these strategic changes, which proved crucial to their continued fundraising success.

This engagement demonstrated that Abacus can become a valuable element of the workflow for any advancement office, whether with a major donor program, preparing for, or in a campaign.
