The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines woke as “Aware of and actively attentive to important societal facts and issues – especially issues of racial and social justice AND disapproving: politically liberal – as in matters of racial and social justice, especially in a way that is considered unreasonable or extreme.”
What’s a nonprofit: It’s widely understood that most nonprofits exist to meet social or community needs or to advance specific charitable, religious, scientific, literary, or educational causes. They must also have stated purposes that serve the public’s interest, such as promoting education, relieving poverty, advancing religion, or enhancing science. And they must operate primarily for the benefit of the public rather than the benefit of their members or directors.
If you are reading this: You are likely employed by, or deeply involved in, a nonprofit organization and value its mission. You agree with the “public” it serves and the “benefit” it provides to that public. It’s also likely that your nonprofit does not exclude any members of the public who will benefit from its mission.
Therefore: Nonprofit organizations work hard to fulfill their missions, in the public’s interest, to the benefit of the public – humans and often animals 🐕, 🐱, 🐇, 🐋, 🐎. And, by definition, they are aware of and actively attentive to important societal facts and issues … including racial and social justice issues.
Be proud and be strong.
